David Bowie~The Next Day

Bowie's new music video staring Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard has sparked controversy with its 'explicit' religious context. In all honesty, i can't see why; it is a decent song with a great video, just like most songs these days.

If you haven't seen it yet, you should!

Two Irish brothers, under the impression they're doing God's work, start killing men they deem as 'evil', whist being hunted down by an FBI agent who gradually begins to question whether he should catch them or join them.

Are you a Good Witch or a Bad Witch?

The classic song ‘Ding Dong the Witch is Dead’ from The Wizard of Oz was used in an online anti- Margaret Thatcher campaign. Campaigners hoped for the song (indicating Thatcher as the dead witch) to get to number one in the official UK singles chart, but ultimately failed to do so, instead reaching number two in the charts.

Despite reaching such a high position in the charts, Radio 1 only played a five second excerpt of the song, regarding it as highly offensive. The protesters who aided the songs arrival at the top of the charts were thought to be explicitly mocking Thatcher’s recent death. However Lord Cecil Parkinson has issued a statement stating: “I don’t mind people disapproving of her, but what I do object to is the idea that she personally destroyed industries.”

Parkinson was right too, blaming Thatcher for the cruel rule of the Tories from 1979- 1992 is just plain stupid. It’s like blaming David Cameron for all the nonsense the Conservatives are doing to the UK’s modern society, Cameron is no more than a poster boy, the identifiable figurehead of the party, and this is exactly what Thatcher was. She wasn’t the only person in the whole party to make decisions, if the majority of her own party agreed on something she did not, Our English democratic tendencies restrained her from changing anything she exclusively believed.

Yes, the Tories during that time, and present day too, seriously made the wrong decisions on some major issues and Thatcher became the point of hatred for the young British working class, like Morrissey and Elvis Costello (who made some good songs about this hatred, but that’s another story entirely…) But she’s dead, the past is the past, you can hate her all you want and sing as many protest songs as you want, you can even wildly party in the street at the death of an old lady.

Thatcher did many things that may have made her a witch, so to speak, but she hasn’t been in power for over twenty years, and certainly wasn’t entirely lucid in her last few years. Stop and just think about her as a normal dead old woman for once, and perhaps think of your own mortality in the process. She is dead and she is gone, so just stop complaining, at least many Thatcher haters are too old to be directly affected by the Tories ridiculous university fees and council tax that’s being enforced now.
